Martial Themes on Kang Xi Porcelains in the Taft Museum

By Michael DeMarco, M.A.

Martial Themes on Kang Xi Porcelains in the Taft Museum

Located in Cincinnati, the Taft Museum contains a number of Chinese ceramics in its collection that have special significance for Qing dynasty (1644–1911) martial traditions. There is a porcelain statue of the God of War, Guangdi. Five vases and a lantern are of special significance for their military themes, probably used for political propaganda.
