The artificiality of attempts to describe Chinese boxing in terms of socalled Shaolin or External and Wudang or Internal schools becomes evident after one becomes familiar with the theoretical foundation and historical background of the martial arts. The “Epitaph for Wang Zhengnan” (c. 1669) by Huang Zongxi is a major reference discussed.
