Gongfu, Guoshu, and Wushu: State Appropriation of the Martial Arts in Modern China

This article examines the way in which the martial arts in China have been appropriated by the government to both further its own interestes and to control a section of society that has historically been regarded as a potential threat. The author shows that state’s influence has had a marked effect on how and why martial arts are practiced.
