The Ryu Ha System: Continuity and Change in Japanese Martial Culture

Japan was ruled by a warrior class for nearly 700 years. In order to understand Japan’s history, it is necessary to understand the method by which warriors were educated through the ryu-ha system (ryu = “tradition”;  ha = “branch” of a ryu). Understanding the teacher-student relationship is vital for all students of Japanaese combative arts.
