From Heiho to Bugei: The Emergence of the Martial Arts in Tokugawa Japan

Before 1600, Japanese warriors had a comprehensive approach to battlefield skills, using a variety of weapons and even gunnery. The term “military methods” (heiho) reflects this approach. Single-weapon specialization known as bugei flourished during the Tokugawa Period (1600-1868). The history bears on modern day theory and practice.
