Modern Japanese martial arts appear to be strongly influenced by the idealistic and pragmatic philosophies developed by the samurai based on Zen and Confucianism. These include the control of one’s mind, the maintenance of strict codes of behavior, and the development of fair but goal-oriented attitudes when participating in competitions.
