Sohei: The Warrior Monks of Old Japan

By Jerry Shine

Sohei: The Warrior Monks of Old Japan

The sohei were Buddhist monks noted for their martial skills and warrior characteristics. They were particularly powerful in Japan from the 10th to the 13th centuries. At times they protested government policies, fought samurai, and fought other sohei groups. Their inspiration came from materialism rather than any spiritual endeavor.
