The principles in the Yi Jing (Book of Changes) have exerted a tremendous influence on military literature in China and Japan. This article examines the role of the Yi Jing in both traditional military thought and the martial arts and in the adaptation of Western weaponry in the Tokugawa period (1603–1868).
