Karate can be studied, analyzed, and interpreted through its folklore. Through analysis, the values, mores, and traditions of the karate world can be delineated. The three most common genres of folklore in karate are legends, folk tales, and proverbs. The author records the oral traditions of many karate masters and compares their content.
