Through karate pioneer Chojun Miyagi (b. 1888), karate was brought out of its exclusively Okinawan enclave to became an educational subject that could be taught in schools and eventually receive worldwide acceptance. He became a student of Kanryu Higashiona (1853-1916) and promoted Goju-ryu for self-defense and character building.
