The Makiwara as a Tool for Learning

By John R. Stebbins, B.A.

The Makiwara as a Tool for Learning

This article details the dynamics of the typical straight karate punch (tsuki) against a firm but flexible object, the makiwara. It provides a review of the physics, physiology, and psychology behind this unique and often ignored training method. The skeletal structure of the hand is discussed, including the physiological adaptation due to training.
