This article shows how one martial art developed its system. “The work begun by Isshin Kempo’s founder, W. S. Russell and currently being pursued by its advanced [black belts] may be intuiting the spiritual essence of a Buddhist monasteric temple art that existed in the 16-17th century, coincidentally known as Isshin Kempo” (Tomio, A., 2000).
