Amdur provides an excellent overview of the naginata in Japan, from its origins, to its design and usage over the centuries. Illustrations show the genearal construction and variations of this weapon. They use declined near the end of the 13th century, replaced with group tactics using spears. After 1600, women were the main bearers of naginatas.
