Swordsmanship and Neo-Confucianism: The Tengus Art

By Jonathan Seckler, B.A.

Swordsmanship and Neo-Confucianism: The Tengus Art

In 1729 Chozanshi Shissai wrote the Essay on the Tengu’s Art (Tengu geijutsu ron) in which he argues that Neo-Confucianism rather than Zen became the foundation of swordsmanship. Seckler translats and comments on this text, illustrating how the sword arts began to be appreciated for their use for self-development.
