In 1790 the 22nd King of Korea’s Yi Dynasty ordered the compilation of a manual for the royal army. The result was the Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts (Mu Yei Do Bo Tong Ji). This article gives the author’s background and sources used, presents an overview of the book, and gives some translations from the empty-hands chapter of volume four.
